I can’t believe Gelakan people urged the State Government to put Chinese load signs in Penang for the ease of Chinese tourists, it’s downlight stupid. As much as I love the Chinese country, people, language, culture, food, songs and movies, I can’t agree to this.
As our Minister had said, the Malay language is written in Roman alphabet, so it would not be too hard for any tourist to understand the road signs. What’s more important is to not let our national identity and language be eroded by this kind of move.
I am going to Beijing this coming October, and I dont want to see any Malay road signs, Malay food or even English ones. Part of the joy of travelling is adapting to foreign environment and culture.

I totally agree with you-we must maintain national identity. If wanna cater for Chinese tourist, of course have to cater for so many other tourists. On the other hand, there are some signs in PJ written in Arabic which is not necessary also. What you think?
Arabic? Are you sure it’s not Jawi – the old writing system for the Malay language?
I am pro spreading knowledge of languages and writing systems. But promoting Chinese, Arabic, Jawi, hieroglyph, ancient Sumerian should be done through campaigns, or classes, or posters. Only national language should be on civil infra and official government matters.
People’s Republic of China also sidelined traditional Hanzi for simplified version for practicality. We need to do away with Jawi, it is our past identity not present. Gotta move on.
Will the Golden Era return to the Egyptians if they revive hieroglyph ?
yeah totally agree with you. Penang belongs to Malaysia, not China.
And there’s something called Malaysian Language.
Yeah, it’s Jawi. I think it’s a similar concept. and I totally agree with you. Just Malay should be used(and maybe English). Once you start giving way to Chinese, Jawi, Arabic, of course the Indians would want Tamil or Hindi or Punjabi. We can’t adhere to everyone’s wants. We should stick to our national language. The French, Germans, Spanish would not give a damn if you do not understand their signs – so we(tourists) take the initiative to understand things there and appreciate the culture. So, people visiting Malaysia should do the same!
